Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 21, 2026
Privacy isn't a feature we bolted on â it's the reason ThrowBone exists. We built
an alternative to the ad-and-tracking economy, so it would make no sense for us to
run one ourselves. We don't sell your data, we don't show you ads, and we collect
only what's needed to do the one thing we do: pass a tip from a reader to a creator.
The short version
- We never sell or rent your name, email, or any personal
information â to anyone, for any reason.
- We show no advertising and use no advertising or
cross-site tracking cookies.
- Creators never learn the identity of the individuals who tipped
them â only anonymous, aggregated figures.
- We never see your full card number; payments run through a secure processor.
- You can view, export, or delete your data, and withdraw unused funds, at any time.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: your name and email address when you create a
tipper or creator account.
- Activity: the bones you throw or pledge, your wallet balance and
top-ups, and (for creators) your payout settings and earnings.
Information collected automatically
- Basic, privacy-preserving analytics: aggregate usage such as
page visits and which features are used, so we can improve the service. This is
measured with a self-hosted, privacy-focused analytics tool
(Umami) that runs on
our own servers, uses no third-party cookies, and does not build
advertising profiles or follow you around the web.
Cookies & local storage
We use a small number of strictly functional storage items â never
for advertising:
- A sign-in cookie so we recognize you and your ThrowBone clicks
without asking you to log in every time.
- A connection token stored in your browser's local storage when
you choose to connect your account to a creator's site, so the bone works there
without relying on third-party cookies. You can disconnect it at any time from the
bone's menu.
That's it. No ad-network cookies, no data brokers, no pixels selling your behavior.
How we use your information
- To operate your account and recognize you across pages.
- To process pledges and payments and pay creators their earnings.
- To email you the things you'd expect: sign-in links, payment requests for
pledges you've accumulated, receipts, and payout notices.
- To keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
We do not use your information to target advertising, because there
is none.
Creator analytics & tipper privacy
Creators get an honest dashboard of their earnings and the reliability of their
incoming pledges. To protect the people doing the tipping, that dashboard shows only
anonymized, aggregated data â counts, averages, and broad reliability
tiers. A creator can never see who tipped them, how to contact them, or any individual's
identity. Your generosity is your business.
Payments
When you pay by card, the transaction is handled by a secure, industry-standard
payment processor. ThrowBone never receives or stores your full card number.
We keep only the record of the amounts pledged and paid so your history and the creators'
earnings stay accurate.
Who we share data with
We share personal information with third parties only as strictly necessary to run
the service, never for their own marketing:
- A payment processor to move money securely.
- An email provider to deliver the account and billing emails you
expect.
- Analytics we host ourselves, so aggregate usage data stays on
our own infrastructure rather than being handed to an outside ad company.
We will disclose information if genuinely required by law, and we'll resist requests
that overreach.
Your choices & rights
- See your data: your dashboard shows your full history at any time.
- Change your mind: rescind any pledge before you pay it â no
questions asked.
- Get your money back: withdraw unused wallet funds whenever you like.
- Delete your account: ask us and we'll remove your personal
information, keeping only what we're legally required to for completed payments.
Children
ThrowBone is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We don't
knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, we'll change the date at the top and, for anything
significant, let account holders know. Our direction won't change: privacy first,
no ads, no selling you.
